Freaky Project Natal Boy is looking at you! so I guess we can say Sony won this, although E3 kind of sucked this year. |

I expected sony to fail hard, and Nintendo to finally come up with something impressive. And the exact opposite happened. |

To be fair to Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony had to pull something like this off otherwise it would be yet another abysmal year not only in the entertainment limelight but in the fiscal number crunch that seems to be another properly placed gauge of media gravity. It isn't like Sony unleashed a killer app people didn't know about already -- I doubt any of us were really expecting MGS announcements so soon but Square Enix have been hinting at XIII all along. XIV is more of "the icing on the cake" than the dish it's on. Microsoft put out well, but without exclusivity from Konami or Square it's only natural to shun them as the least capable in terms of digital media and having the "new standard" for optical drives sort of does that in. Sony's proving its longevity despite having a somewhat shaky year. FFXIII, FFXIV, MGS: Rising/MGS: Peace Walker have sold me, but I've already had all the consoles since launch anyways. Boo, hiss. Whatever happened to actual games? It seems like each company is all about having 1 or 2 main titles and thats it, I feel a major lack in games now then in previous years. |

All original ideas have been used up at this point. So anything new will either be a repeat game, or a total piece of shit. |

But when something beautiful, original, and artistically-inventive to the industry comes out, nobody buys it and the owning companies fire all the developers... ';.;

As long as we're concerned with an overemphasis on what people insist is "casual gaming," seeing any potential return-to-roots movement with companies that massive is slim to none, but that's pointing out the obvious. I think a fair amount of us yearn for simplicity meeting the new, shiny HD world, but let's take Nintendo as a flagship example: it's known incredibly well for Mario, Donkey Kong, the Legend of Zelda, yet the latter two are the ones that rarely see as much of a push as the former. Mario's an icon and pretty much subject to Nintendo's flirtatious behavior with experimenting on what was originally a damn good platform game. Now? You've got some real fuck-up games out there, but you had a fair amount of those back during the NES/SNES eras too. Personally speaking, if only one or two major titles are produced in the way of the console Zelda games are, I'll sit pretty than with 20 different Zelda games that push shitty ideas accompanying a flagship that's decent. It isn't wise anymore financially, either, but Nintendo have pockets deep enough to do shit like that. Sega, on the other hand, don't. How many Sonic spinoffs have we seen crash and burn looking at more of a fiscal loss as well as a lack of "Sonic game" mentality? People naturally are attracted to the "simplicity in HD" amalgam as was said earlier but it seems putting Sonic on a skateboard or pitting him against Mario (in an ironic addition to the shifty amount of crapware games out there) in some Olympic fail-festivity, I'll gladly turn my nose to anything with the name "Sonic" in it merely because it isn't a game anymore. It's bad PR and a bad plethora of games. |

Ack, something I should have specified before on par with that: third parties seem to be at a particular advantage over the companies responsible for making the capable hardware, although sales wouldn't lead anybody to believe that. In terms of the depth of games it's only natural that the game market's been successfully sect off by first/third parties developing occasionally in conjunction but sometimes multi-platform -- look at Konami's Kojima Productions, Microsoft's former vicegrip on Bungie and the dread of Square Enix making the "spot on" games that win these conventions over. Of course you have to have a medium, but this is what people want. Nintendo/Sony themselves have become more of console entrepreneurs than game developers compared to the thousandfold out there anymore. Sega, again, in its own... category. ;P |
